Il primo volume di Figure del pensiero medievale, come recita il titolo, presenta “i fondamenti” e gli “inizi” della figura della teologia che verrà elaborata nella riflessione occidentale fino alla “Via moderna”, ossia fino al XIV e agli inizi del XV secolo. Né si tratta soltanto degli inizi cronologici: i vari saggi editi nel volume delineano, infatti, gli inizi metodologici, in certo modo esemplari, che avviano e determinano la forma della teologia, quale verrà in seguito elaborata. Il capitolo introduttivo offre (...) una sintesi della teologia medievale, con le sue fonti e i suoi riferimenti e processi fondamentali. Seguono poi i grandi modelli: Agostino, con la fede che genera l'"intelletto teologico"; Boezio, con le sue esemplari attuazioni o i suoi "opuscoli" della teologia risultante dall'investimento razionale della stessa fede; Gregorio, che resterà il geniale ispiratore della teologia come “intelligenza spirituale”, come lettura di tutte le risorse dei significati biblici, destinati ad avverarsi come esperienza; lo Pseudo-Dionigi, il maestro della teologia come inesausta ricerca e desiderio di Dio come di inarrivabile trascendenza, e impossibilità di "possesso", di là da ogni rappresentatività e simbolo; Isidoro di Siviglia, con il suo enciclopedismo, mirante alla visione il più possibile comprensiva della realtà della natura e della storia. Objectives The potential effects of exposure to repetitive subconcussive head impacts through routine participation in sport are not understood. To investigate the effects of repetitive subconcussive head impacts we studied boxers following customary training (sparring) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), decomposition electromyographic (EMG) and tests of memory. Methods Twenty amateur boxers performed three 3-min sparring bouts. Parameters of brain function and motor control were assessed prior to sparring and again immediately, 1 h and 24 h post-sparring. Twenty control participants were (...) assessed following mock-sparring. Results One hour after sparring boxers showed increased corticomotor inhibition, altered motor unit recruitment strategies, and decreased memory performance relative to controls, with values returning to baseline by the 24 h follow up. Conclusion Repetitive subconcussive head impacts associated with sparring resulted in acute and transient brain changes similar to those previously reported in soccer heading, providing convergent evidence that sport-related head impacts produce a GABAergic response. These acute changes in brain health are reminiscent of effects seen following brain injury, and suggest a potential mechanism underlying the damaging long-term effects of routine repetitive head impacts in sport. To understand how small business entrepreneurs respond to government policy one has to know their risk and time preferences. Are they risk averse, or have high discount rates, such that they are hard to motivate? We have conducted a set of field experiments in Denmark that will allow a direct characterization of small business entrepreneurs in terms of these traits. We build on experimental tasks that are well established in the literature. The results do not suggest that small business entrepreneurs (...) are more or less risk averse than the general population under the assumption of Expected Utility Theory. However, we generally find an S-shaped probability weighting function for both small business entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs, with entrepreneurs being more optimistic about the chance of occurrence for the best outcome in lotteries with real monetary outcomes. The results also point to a significant difference in individual discount rates between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs: entrepreneurs are willing to wait longer for certain rewards than the general population. Starting from the 13th century, the question of defining theology as a science gained prominence within a new epistemological reflection on the discipline. It has been hypothesized that the availability of new translations of Aristotelian works significantly contributed to the growing interest among theologians in the theory of science. One of the most prominent intellectuals who recognized the necessity of defining theology as a science and outlining its boundaries and investigative methods in relation to other disciplines, was Albert the Great (...) (d. 1280). Numerous studies have been dedicated to exploring Albert’s treatment of this subject since the 1930s. However, little to no attention has been given to the role played by Arabic sources, particularly the works of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037), the philosopher and polymath of Persian origin, in shaping Albert’s own definition of theology as a science. This contribution concentrates on the analysis of a section of the Summa Theologiae (Treatise I, quaestio V, chapter 3), with particular emphasis on the ‘translation’ of the logical-argumentative method from its domain of application in scientific and philosophical research to the branch of theology dedicated to safeguarding Christian doctrine against the criticisms and the attacks of heretics. The aim is to analyze how Albert accomplished this translation of the method of inquiry by drawing parallels between the defence of the principles of philosophical inquiry, which is a primary concern of metaphysics, and the defence of the articles of faith in theology. It is by reconciling sources from both the Christian and the Arabo-Islamic traditions that Albert claims the use of a form of dialectic argumentation within theology. (shrink)
